Said by: id rather take a minor discount on my bill for running an AP for them.I'd typically agree but my unlikely theoretical security and performance concerns (a vulnerability being found in the separation of the guest and home network and wifi congestion) would be outweighed by having a 'free' AC router.Do tell us when you get tired of paying FIOS that $130 (/w tax) for the length of a 2 year-contract for their router. Do you have a guest network configured on it?
Care to throw in some more unfounded speculation about THAT router somehow losing its marbles and not separating the guest network from your private one? Frankly, in the 5+ years that guest networks have been common, I've NEVER become aware of a bug like this, ever.
And IF it was to occur, we can be rather sure that CV is going to fix such a bug for the entire userbase, rather than it being persistent in millions of NEVER UPDATED home-routers, even if the manufacturer released a software update. Cite your sources, or admit that that speculation was the pure brainfart I think it is. Said by: I switched out the OOL router with a real router and I would like to put the OOL router into bridge mode for wireless. However, the GUI is all in the cloud and OOL can't access it behind my router.
Is there a manual way of controlling the OOL router? I can't find any specifications/documentation.The answer is: use your 'real' router as a bridge, additionally, try to use a DMZ IP. Per ยป, the Smart Router can have a DMZ configured. I can't verify that because I don't have one, but others here may confirm this.
You now have 2 options: 1.) Hook up the Sage-Mcom router to the cable modem, then reconfigure your 'real' router as a bridge by disabling LAN DHCP and disabling NAT. Use the WLAN+LAN side of your 'real' router for all other things connected in your house. Optionally, define a DMZ IP on the Smart Router via the optimum.net remote management, then give that IP (by way of DHCP lease reservation) to your 'real' router on the LAN, and thus you'll get all traffic forwarded to it that is non-NAT'd, non-port-forwarded, or not for any port the Sage-Mcom router is listening on. I am still not sure behind your motivation for having 2 routers - wireless coverage not big enough for your house?
2.) If you want to use the Sage-Mcom router behind your 'real' router, reverse the above, designate a DMZ IP and DHCP lease-reservation for the Sage-Mcom on your 'real router', and hook the WAN port of the Sage-Mcom router to the LAN of your 'real' router. Cite your sources, or admit that that speculation was the pure brainfart I think it is.Wow, a bit aggressive. I switched to FIOS this year for price reasons but am not a fanboy by any means. (Optimum was largely fine, had it for many years, but they abruptly raised the price to something extreme) My package with FIOS is around $75 maybe $80 with the 50/25 plan because I have the basic tv package. (not to mention $300 gift card for choosing the contract option) Anybody in a Optimum/ FIOS area should continual look at their options. It can pay off. I luckily signed up before the obnoxious router rental fee.
For many reasons (no 5.0Ghz band, awkward interface and no guest network), I use my own Netgear R6300. Anyway, I largely agree with your point that a bug is unlikely which is why I qualified it with 'unlikely' and 'theoretical'. Honestly I'm much more worried about Optimum (and the NSA) getting even more in-depth knowledge of the mac addresses in my home and being able to profile me even more at a device level in addition to at a household level. But I completely admit that I am a tinfoil hat guy at times about my internet.
When I said their new AC router would be enough to get me over these minor concerns I wasn't being sarcastic at all.The one minor technical thing I think you overlook is that most guest networks are now encrypted (a good trend) as opposed to being completely open or having a sign-in page (like Optimum WiFi or Hotels). That means even if the firewall between the guest and regular network were to fail, the number of people who could exploit the vulnerability would be limited to those trusted at least with the guest encryption key.

This process usually works for resetting any router to it's factory setting. Note: It is worth reading more about and what the risks and considerations are when resetting your router this way, instead of just rebooting it.
